详细分来，怪兽牌又分为普通怪兽牌和效果怪兽牌；魔法牌又分为魔法卡和陷阱卡。普通怪兽牌一般只需要看它的攻防，所有的怪兽都有自己的种族和属性。效果怪兽牌指被攻击、翻转或是其它情况下可以有特殊效果的牌。比如企鹅兵，此牌攻击仅900，防御500。然而此牌有翻转效果，当你用其里侧表示放在场上时，无论是被敌人攻击导致强制翻转或是在自己的下回合翻转召唤，都可以造成”将场上的两张怪兽牌返回使用者手中“的效果。当你的怪兽不如对方强大时，使用此效果可以将他好不容易召唤的高级怪兽返回手中。每张怪兽卡都有星级，星星越多等级越高，而所召唤时所需要的生祭也越多。4星一下的牌可以正常召唤，而5～6星的牌则需除去场上己方一张怪兽牌（称为生祭）才可召唤，7星以上的则需要2张怪兽牌做生祭。所以，对手辛辛苦苦召唤出来的高级怪兽可以被一张小小的企鹅拖下水。
而魔法牌的使用则更加复杂。同样当你遇到高级怪兽卡时，最简单的例子，魔法卡中使用雷击，效果时摧毁对方所有怪兽，一下解决所有难题。可惜此卡在牌组中只能有一张。或者盖上一张陷阱卡"激流葬”，在对方召唤怪兽时，将此卡发动，可以摧毁对方以及己方所有的怪兽！
由于魔法卡的效果太多，无法详细讲解。汉化版的混沌力量——城之内版中卡片的说明还是比较详细的，可以在组牌的时候看看。由于牌组的数量限制在40～80张，所以尽量选择实用的牌。个人经验大概44～48张左右比较合适，不会翻到一些自己不急用的牌。打牌时，双方先各抽5张，以后每轮各抽一张，在场上正面表示的称为“表侧表示”，反面则为“里侧表示”，底牌出光的一方或者LP先为0的一方失败。
